This picture shows the red giant star Betelgeuse, the 10th brightest star in the night sky, and sometimes the brightest in the Orion constellation. It is about 550 light years from the Earth, and about 17 times heavier and 850 times larger than the Sun. Its brightness varies a lot, probably due to dust particles ejected from the star, but also by changes in its size and temperature. The picture was shot with a Canon EOS 600D camera attached to a telescope.
