Description

This photo of the Comet C2014 Q2 Lovejoy was shot in January 2015 using the telescope in the Steinberg observatory of the Steirischer Astronomenverein near Graz, Austria. It shows the comet’s coma, which is a cloud of gas, ice and dust particles created when the Sun warms the comet’s surface as it orbits the Sun. The comet’s core itself is too small to be visible from the Earth, even when using a telescope!
