wide angle Orion Pleiades and Comet C2014 Q2 Lovejoy

Description

This picture shows the position in the sky of the comet C2014 Q2 Lovejoy in relation to the Orion star constellation. The Pleiades open star cluster is a small group of stars near the right edge of the image (about one third from the top). The comet itself is in the center of the double ellipse. Enlarging the picture shows the greenish color of the gases emitted by the comet evaporation, compared to the white color of most of the stars in the picture.
